Manecas Santos: A Biography of the Struggle - Rosário Luz
Rosário Luz debuted as a writer in 2012 with a column in the Cape Verdean weekly newspaper Expresso das Ilhas, focusing on the unique aspects of Cape Verdean politics, history, and culture. Since then, she has regularly contributed opinion articles to various publications, both local and international, always maintaining a focus on the singularity of the Cape Verdean experience. Manecas Santos: A Biography of the Struggle is her first book. It explores the social realities of Guinea-Bissau and the Islands of Cape Verde – two former Portuguese colonies in West Africa – and the political motivations of the PAIGC fighters, through the eyes of a young guerrilla fighter: her uncle.
Manecas Santos’ experience spans two countries and an entire era. His unique characteristics as an individual and participant in the revolutionary process set him apart as a singular figure in the events in which he was involved; and his accounts are an excellent way to illuminate this period, so crucial to our present.
The struggle over our history has been self-serving and unfair to the people to whom it belongs. There is nothing more dangerous than the colonization of history by political power, for there is nothing more valuable to any community than understanding its own history. Hence the importance of having access to narratives like this one, which seek to reveal, without agendas or interests, how a man's life intersected with history during a crucial period.
