Having begun developing political activities against fascist-colonialism, always together with his brother, Amílcar Cabral, in 1956, the two, Amílcar and Luís Aristides Pereira (first President of the Republic of Cape Verde), and some other nationalists, founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). Forced to leave Bissau following the repression unleashed by the PIDE (Portuguese secret police) during and after the Pidjiguiti massacre in 1959, he participated in the preparation of the armed struggle as a member of the PAIGC Political Bureau and a member of the War Council. One of the founders of the National Union of Workers of Guinea, of which he was the first secretary-general, he was later, during the liberation war, also responsible for the national reconstruction of the liberated regions.

Deputy Secretary-General of the PAIGC in 1973, during the Second Congress, he was elected that same year during the National Assembly that proclaimed national independence. President of the Council of State of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, a position to which he was re-elected in 1976, after recognition by Portugal.

Luís Cabral was very active both domestically and in foreign relations, having visited numerous countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America as Head of State of Guinea-Bissau.

In the book Chronicle of Liberation, Luís Cabral recounts the struggle for independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, led by his brother, Amílcar Cabral.

In the year that marks the centenary of Amílcar Cabral's birth and the fiftieth anniversary of the 25th of April, the re-edition of this book, originally published in July 1984, is a tribute to its author, an unavoidable name in the history of liberation struggles in Africa, who passed away on May 30, 2009.
