Germano Almeida was born on the island of Boa Vista in 1945, leaving it at the age of 18. He graduated in Law from the University of Lisbon. He lives in São Vicente, where, since 1979, he has also practiced law. His novels have been translated into several languages. He is characterized by his use of humor and satire, denouncing the duplicity of Cape Verdean society, characterized during the first years of independence by a single-party regime. In 2018, he was awarded the Camões Prize.
On the third anniversary of the controversial conviction and imprisonment of MP Amadeu Oliveira, a compilation of texts by the writer Germano Almeida is published under the title Amadeu Oliveira: The Hell of Illegality . Reading them intrigues and provokes thought about the obscure intricacies of the political and judicial processes that led to the imprisonment of that lawyer, known for his denunciations and civic actions against the status quo of the political and judicial system in Cape Verde.
